Devil's nest

And if you really strain your ears to hear, you can imagine hearing the crackling symphony of the aggregate even today.

Pirunpesä in Hollola is a gorge cutting through the quartzite bedrock of Tiirismaa, with vertical walls up to 20 meters high. This impressive natural formation has been a well-known attraction since the 1800th century. The Tiirismaa rock area has been found to be very valuable nationally, and it is one of the most significant sites in Salpauselkä Geopark.

The 4,9 km long Tiirismaan kierros hiking route passes through Pirunpesa, along which there are also e.g. a lookout point, hut shelter and fireplace, as well as target boards about the area's nature.

Salpauselkä Geopark destination

The rock fissure has arisen in one of the weak zones of Tiirisma's bedrock, where the stone material has cracked and broken over time. At the end of the ice age, about 12 years ago, the southern edge of the continental glacier blocked the ice lake formed by the meltwater of the glacier on the north side of the cliffs of Tiirisma. The Pirunpesä gorge was created when the water masses of the ice lake erupted through a broken part of the rock to the south, taking loose rock material with it. The fine material was transported further with the current, but the larger boulders piled up as a quarry at the southern discharge point of the bed. The place probably got its name from this quarry.

Tour of Tiirismaa

The Tiirismaa tour is just under 5 km long hiking route that goes through very varied terrain and there are many interesting natural sites along the way. In the west, you can admire Isa Tiilijärvi from the viewpoint, which is named Tilk's peek. When returning to the trail from the lookout point, you step into the forest, and when you climb the hill, after the rain, you might hear the gurgling of an underground stream under your feet. At the highest point of the route, you can fry sausages in Marta's hut (link) and in the northeast you can admire the rock fissure of Pirunpesä. The height difference along the route is about 70 meters. There is climbing and it is worth it.

Sedges, sedges, sedges and special types of mosses

The Pirunpesä nature reserve is partly fresh, partly dry fabric. The area is quarried and stony, and the terrain is varied. There are fallen rotting trees and standing kelo trees in the terrain. The trails in the area are good for walking, even though they are rooty and stony like nature trails. Special species of moss grow on the rocks and boulders, which are usually found only in maritime climates.
