Kukkolanharju nature trail – 6 km
Last updated: 08.07.2024Kukkolanharju is part of a long northwest-southeast oriented ridge sequence that ends with the edge formation of I Salpausselkä. The slopes of Kukkolanharju create a great setting for moving around in nature. The hiking trail climbs over the ridge and returns to the shore of beautiful Valkjärvi. The height difference along the route is about 60 meters. Valki's loop goes around the beautiful Valkjärvi. The route is flat and partly runs through the center of the settlement. Valkin Lenkki is not indicated on the terrain. In winter, cross-country ski trails run partly on the same ground as the hiking route. Even from the cross-country skiing trail, you can reach the lake scenery in the southern part of Valkjärvi.

Me and the badger in ridge landscapes
Retkipaikka.fi , opens in a new tabJust before the ascent, something special happened – another creature stepped on the path, namely a badger. Admittedly, I really hoped to see a badger in the wild and now I got to watch him for a long time, the distance was maybe seven meters. We stared into each other's eyes for about a couple of seconds - then the badger scurried down the path in the other direction. Nice encounter.

Fool's Hell
At the bottom of the gorge flows a stream with clear water, which gets its water from springs. Ferns and old trees grow along the stream. The area's traditional biotopes are maintained by Eastern Finnish cattle grazing in the forest pastures of the Tupala farm. Both the forest pastures and the eastern Finnish cattle, i.e. kytos, are currently under threat.

Fool's Hell
Helvetinrotko is a beautiful natural attraction. Helvetti probably got its wild name from the fact that it is always dark at the bottom of the deep gorge shaded by steep slopes and trees.
