Harmiokallio
Last updated: 15.07.2024Harmiokallio is located in a nationally valuable cultural landscape, which represents Hollola's oldest village settlement, possibly dating back to the Iron Age. The handsome granite cliff of the northeastern edge of the rock rises to a height of 15-20 meters.
Harmiokallio consists of granite, which has crystallized from molten rock or magma deep in the earth's crust. Almost 2 billion years ago, the Svekofennide mountain range, similar to the Alps, rose in the area of present-day southern Finland as a result of the collision of the continental plates. Granite then rose towards the earth's surface. Over the course of millions of years, even high mountains are leveled by natural forces. The rocks in our area, such as Harmiokallio, are remnants of the lowest parts of this ancient mountain range.

Nature trail and log cabin
You can get to know Harmiokallio on a short nature trail that starts from the ledge under the cliff and goes up the stairs to the top of the rock. Up on the rock you can admire the cultural landscape and the beautiful forest. The cliff is suitable for climbing, but climbing on the rock is only allowed for those with a permit. At the end of the nature trail, you can stop at a beautiful log cabin to admire the landscape shaped by the water. Laavu and nature trail in use with notification.

Salpauselkä Geopark destination
During the last ice age, all of Finland was covered by a 2-3 kilometer thick continental glacier. The moving glacier took with it loose material from the wide, southeast-northwest-oriented bedrock depression at Harmiokallio. In this case, the cliff of Harmiokallio on the edge of the crater remained visible. Harmiokallio has vertical cracks running northeast-southwest, which contribute to creating the cliff's appearance and a surface that is well suited for climbing.
Tour of the seven villages
