Last updated: 15.07.2024As long as it lives, it sees a lot
On the Hännysaari nature trail, you will adventure in the archipelago landscapes in the forest and on the porch admiring the scenery of Lake Vesijärvi. The island hides a fairy-tale forest, rugged rocky landscapes and an archipelago atmosphere. There is a nature trail on the island, at the end of which you will encounter a beautiful rocky landscape on Cape Vaania. At the beginning of the trail, next to the island's boat dock, there is a shed maintained by the Päijänne Recreation Area Association, where you can make fires after your island adventure.

Large islands, narrow straits, canals, green beaches, rocky islets, one after the other more beautiful coves
Päijänne, the most famous large lake in central Finland, offers unique recreation opportunities with its nearby water bodies. Almost 200 kilometers of water from Lahti to Jyväskylä, from Heinola to Jämsä, large backwaters, narrow straits, canals, green beaches, rocky islets, one after the other more beautiful coves and variously equipped destinations along the way.
The Päijänne recreation area association maintains recreation areas open to all, available all year round in the entire Päijänne region. On these pages, you will find information about the association's areas with indicative equipment descriptions and approach maps.

Vesijärvi is located between the first and second Salpausselkä. It is irregular in shape and is divided into several basins separated by straits and shallows, the largest of which are Enonselkä, Kajaanselkä, Komonselkä and Laitialanselkä. Vesijärvi flows into Etelä Päijänte via Vääksynjoki.
Vesijärvi is a rich aquatic plant lake with endangered plant species such as jouhiva, dark star's beard and different types of sedge grass. Two hundred species of birds nest in the lake, the most abundant of which are the common lapwing, coot and laughing gull. Finland's largest collared heron population nests in Lake Vesijärvi. On the shores of Lake Vesijärvi, there are five nature conservation or Natura areas established for the protection of waterfowl. Vesijärvi is a good fishing lake. Predatory fish have been planted in the lake for the pleasure of fishermen and to keep low-value roach fish under control. Important game fish are pike, zander, perch and whitefish.
Vesijärvi Foundation

The Lake Foundation of Päijät-Häme is a trendsetter in water management and a strong example of the power of cooperation in working for biodiversity.
