Hammonjoki
Last updated: 09.01.2024Hammonjoki is located near the church village of Hollola, gets its water from the Salpausselkä springs and flows into Lake Vesijärvi. The river is one of the only trout rivers located in the Vesijärvi catchment area, with a naturally increasing population of trout and brook trout. As a fishing destination, Hammonjoki is divided into two separate fishing license areas. The longer, one and a half kilometer long area 1 is located downstream, between Vesijärvi and Koveroistenjärvi, while the half kilometer long area 2 stretches from the southern end of Koveroistenjärvi all the way to the confluence of Sepänpuro and Laavijoki. The area of the Hammonjoki catchment area is about 45 km2. The main riverbed begins as Kiikunjoki, changing to Sepänpuro. The river widens into Koveroistenjärvi, which flows into Vesijärvi as Hammonjoki.
Fishing in Hammonjoki is only allowed with fly fishing gear. Only a barbless hook may be used for fishing. In the river area, at the mouth of Hammonjoki, Vesijärvi and Koveroistenjärvi, the use of standing gear is prohibited. Fishing in Hammonjoki requires a state Fisheries Management fee and a Hammonjoki fly fishing permit.

Lahti Fly Fishermen
Hammonjoki is a challenging place for fly fishing. It requires getting to know and learning, but often it also rewards patience. One of the secrets of the place's popularity as a fishing destination is that the fishing conditions there change quickly due to the fluctuation of the water level and the clarity of the water. Perhaps this is one of the secrets of its popularity. As long as the current remains calm, you can fish in Hammonjoki all year round, but summer is clearly the best time in Hammonjoki. The actual fishing season usually starts around mid-May, when the water level drops and the water becomes clearer.

Hammonjoki is the only river in the Vesijärvi catchment area with a naturally increasing population of trout and brook trout. In 1996, a two-part fishing destination was established. In the fall of 2006, the Hammonjoki and its tributaries, the Laavijoki and the Sepänpuro were renovated, with the aim of enabling especially trout to reach their breeding grounds. The work was mostly completed in 2006, but some small items and finishing touches were carried out in 2007.
