The story of Hollola
According to the story, the municipality got its name from two giants, Hollo and Marta, who tried to build a church on Kapatuosia hill, today's church village of Hollola. Hollo carried the foundation stones, but they rolled down the hill to their current location. Martta got nervous about this and shouted "HOLLO!" in a loud voice, which echoed Hollo...lo...lo...la. And that's how the village got its name.
Hollola has already been inhabited since the Stone Age, in the Viking Age it was a major trade center and in the Middle Ages the churchwarden of Hollola was the head of the region larger than today's Päijät-Hämetta. It was also a significant fortress keeper in the border region, protecting its residents and the rest of Finland from enemy raids.
Throughout the ages, Hollola has been a place where trade is done and where people live. It provided protection, security and sustenance from generation to generation. The village of Lahti also separated from Mother Hollola, which first grew into a town and then into a city. Today, Hollola is successful as a municipality where you build a home, business or return home from the world.
