Special education

Pupils in basic education have the right to special education or other support if, for example, a learning or adaptation difficulty, disability or illness requires it.

According to the Basic Education Act, students have the right to receive, in addition to teaching according to the curriculum, student guidance and adequate support for learning and going to school throughout basic education.

Special education is organized either alongside other education, as part-time special education, or the student is accepted or transferred to full-time special education. Part-time special education is given in connection with general education to a student with mild learning or adaptation difficulties. Mild learning difficulties can be, for example, difficulties in speaking, reading or writing. They can be related to a subject or appear, for example, as disturbances in attention, concentration, motor skills, perception, sensory functions or social interaction.

The student may need temporary or longer-term support in learning and going to school. The need for support can vary from slight to strong, or the student may need many types of support at the same time.

  • part-time special education can be given as simultaneous education (two or more teachers work in the same learning environment with the same students)
  • in a small group
  • individually
  • also students covered by special support and preparatory education have the right to receive part-time special education if necessary
  • The aim is to organize the student's special support primarily in their own neighborhood school and in connection with other teaching. If that is not possible, the nearest appropriate school and special class place will be found for the student.
