Preparatory education for basic education – VALO

Last updated: 20.01.2025

Preparatory education for primary education is intended for all pre-primary and primary school-age children and young people with an immigrant background who do not yet have the necessary linguistic skills to study in pre-primary or primary education.

VALO means preparatory teaching. At VALO, Finnish language, culture and other subjects are studied according to the student's own study program. Preparatory education takes 900-1000 hours, or about one year.

The main focus of the teaching is the development of the student's language skills and the provision of skills for pre-primary or basic education. Both children and young people who have just moved to the country and those born in Finland with an immigration background can participate in the preparatory education for basic education. Children from bilingual families or returnees can also participate in the lessons.

The preparatory teaching group in Hollola is at the Salpakangas school.

After preparatory education, the student moves on to basic education.
