TET - Getting to know working life

Last updated: 12.02.2025

Getting to know the working life (TET) is an important part of the working life knowledge obtained in elementary school. During the TET sessions, students get to know the activities of companies and work communities in a guided way. At the same time, they are offered the opportunity to try their hand at workplaces among adults. Experiences from working life are important when students think about their choice of profession and their further studies.

Preparation for TET period

The introduction to working life period is three days in the spring in the seventh grade, one week in the spring in the eighth grade, and two week-long periods in the fall in the ninth grade, or one of the weeks in the fall and the other in the spring (Kankaan school).

The students of Hollola's middle schools are used to finding their own places to get to know each other. In this way, young people get the opportunity to practice the important skill of job hunting early on. At the same time, the employer has the opportunity to meet the young person in person before agreeing on a TET position. When preparing for the TET periods, students are instructed in the student guidance classes on the rules of the game of working life and the strict observance of the workplace's own instructions. For them, matters related to occupational safety and good behavior, honesty, punctuality and the right attitude to work are emphasized.

TET – RULES OF THE GAME

Familiarization days are weekdays from Monday to Friday. The length of the day is six hours, including meals. It is hoped that the TET days will take place around 9.00:15.00 a.m. to 20.00:XNUMX p.m. The student can also agree with the employer on working hours that differ from the normal school day, but he must have the consent of his home. The working day may last until XNUMX:XNUMX at the most. Getting to know working life can also be done in alternative ways. More information can be obtained from the school's study advisor.

If a student falls ill during the TET days, he has the obligation to immediately notify the person in charge of his workplace and his teacher.

The student remains a student of the school and is not employed by the employer whose workplace he is visiting. The primary responsibility therefore lies with the municipality. The students are insured.

There is a responsible person at the workplace who familiarizes the student with the workplace, its instructions and potential hazards, and otherwise takes care of the student during the period.

The student is not paid for the TET period. The basis is that the student is not in an employment relationship with the employer during the TET period. Gained experience in working life, good supervision at the workplace and possibly meals from the workplace are usually the best salary for a young person during the TET period.

During the familiarization period, general occupational safety regulations must be followed. Students may not be assigned dangerous or harmful work in accordance with the laws and regulations on the protection of young workers. Government decree on particularly harmful and dangerous work for young workers If a student has an accident at the workplace, the school must be notified and an accident report must be filed.

Pursuant to the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the employer of the familiarization destination is responsible for ensuring that the machines and equipment handed over to the students are in appropriate condition. General regulations and regulations related to safety must be observed when introducing the work. If they are violated, the employer may be held liable.

The school handles the health checks requested by the employer. It should be noted that a salmonella certificate is usually required in catering and food industry workplaces.

We hope that a TET place can be found nearby or at most one bus ride away. If the student's one-way journey from home to workplace is more than 5 km, transportation will be handled in accordance with normal school transport practices:
1. The student receives tickets for traveling or
2. The student uses the same travel card as during school days. The travel card or tickets may only be used for TET trips. Trips outside of Lahti and Hollola are not reimbursed.
3. No compensation is paid for the moped/moped car or riding with parents.

It is hoped that the student can eat at the employer's expense. If this is not possible, the student eats at the nearest Hollola school. If the student has to eat at his own expense, he will be paid a meal allowance afterwards according to the number of days in the TET period.

The student prepares a diary or report about his work tasks and workplace at home, which he returns to the student advisor.

At the end of the TET period, the workplace gives the students a written certificate of familiarization with working life. The evaluation of the student's TET episode is written by the person responsible for the episode or the person who has worked with the student the most. When giving an assessment, it's good to remember that students are just getting to know working life, not yet ready professionals. The student returns this certificate to the student advisor, but gets it later.

The student is insured in accordance with the accident law and the study event. If a student causes damage at the workplace by behavior that violates the rules, he is liable for damages. There is no minimum age limit in the Damage Compensation Act. The age limit for criminal responsibility is 15 years.

  • Always arrive at the workplace on time.
  • Introduce yourself and your business.
  •  Dress appropriately and as required by the job. If the workplace has specific dress code requirements, follow them. Suitable footwear improves working comfort.
  • Getting to know the job is schooling at the workplace.
  • At the workplace, as elsewhere, one behaves in accordance with good manners.
  • Keep your cell phone out of sight and sound throughout the working day.
  • Be open-minded.
  • Act openly and honestly.
  • Be interested in the tasks assigned to you and be self-initiative.
  •  Listen carefully to the instructions you receive. Don't get confused, even if there are a lot of things at once, and you won't remember everything. You can always ask again. No one who asks gets lost!
  • Do your work carefully to the end.
  • The workplace always has its own rules, which you must also follow. In addition, remember that school rules also apply to you in the workplace.
  • Report absences to the person in charge of the workplace first thing in the morning. It's worth putting up with minor pains and going to the workplace, but you can't go to the workplace when you're sick!
  • Follow the safety instructions. You are liable for compensation if you cause the damage intentionally.
  • Since the TET period is going to school, you are obliged to do the assignments you got from school. Write a diary/assignment immediately after the working day.
  • You are not employed by the employer, so you will not be paid for the period. The best salary is that you get to know the working life and get experience in "real jobs".
  • Remember that in addition to yourself, you represent the school and home.
