Last updated: 04.09.2024

Basic education is general education according to the curriculum regulated by the Basic Education Act. Every child living permanently in Finland is obliged to attend school.

Compulsory schooling usually starts the year a child turns seven. Compulsory education ends when the subject turns 18 or when the subject has successfully completed a second-level degree before this.

The municipality has a common curriculum, which is supplemented by school-specific school year plans. The curriculum and school-specific academic year plans show the school's mission, operating concept, possible emphasis, class allocation, goals and contents of subjects, and evaluation of teaching and learning.

In grades 1-6, teaching is mainly organized as classroom teaching, and in grades 7-9 as subject teaching.
