Groundwater

The Hollola area has extensive and excellent groundwater resources, which are located for the most part on the edge formation of I Salpausselkä and the related longitudinal ridges. A groundwater area is a demarcatable area where groundwater is formed and occurs in abundance.

In the Hollola region, there are nine important groundwater areas for water procurement (class 1) and 15 groundwater areas suitable for water procurement (class 2). The yield of Hollola's classified groundwater areas, i.e. the estimated amount of groundwater formed daily, is a total of 69 m³/d. We get to enjoy fresh groundwater as our domestic water, which is not a given in Finland either. In addition, water is piped from Hollola to Lahti and, in a crisis, also to meet the needs of the capital region, which means that in addition to regional water supply, Hollola's groundwater areas have wider national significance. About 500 m³/d or 9% of the total yield is currently taken from Hollola's groundwater areas for water supply.

Hollola belongs to the Salpauselkä Geopark area, whose groundwater formations are nationally significant. For example, the Kukonkoivu-Hatsina groundwater area in the caches of the first Salpauselka is one of the largest in Finland. The main part of the groundwater still discharges into the environment, e.g. as clear water springs. The natural opportunity of springs has become rarer in many places, but luckily here in Hollola we can still find several significant sites. Because of this, Hollola's three extensive groundwater areas have received the so-called E classification, i.e. in their areas there are protected natural or natural-like important surface water and soil ecosystems directly dependent on groundwater (e.g. spring, spring stream, spring pond or spring-effect swamp).

Clean groundwater is a treasure that needs to be protected

We should all be careful about what we put into the soil and thus into the groundwater. Groundwater is sensitive to contamination and cleaning it can be either impossible, very expensive and/or take decades. By protecting our precious groundwater, we can continue to enjoy clean drinking water and our beautiful spring environments.

In the sidebar list, you can find a link to the Vesi.fi website Right there in the groundwater area brochures, which have been prepared for households, agriculture, small industry, land use and heating systems. The brochures can be downloaded on the website in pdf format and are freely available.

The municipality's tool is the groundwater protection plan, the update of which was completed in the fall of 2021. The groundwater protection plan is a guideline that is applied at the municipal level, e.g. in land use planning and official supervision as well as in permit processing. An action program is attached to the protection plan, which lists practical measures to improve and protect the groundwater condition.
