Dredging and mowing
Last updated: 17.04.2026The Water Act governs the use and construction of water. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) must be notified of any mechanical dredging of water bodies, dumping of dredged materials, filling in shorelines and mowing of aquatic plants at least 30 days before the measures are taken.
When the amount of dredged material exceeds 500 m3, it is a water management project requiring a permit and requires a water permit from the Licensing and Supervision Authority. Based on case-by-case considerations, smaller dredging may also require a water permit.
When planning dredging, you should check the site's planning regulations and find out the possible nature conservation areas in the area.
