Control of alien species

Last updated: 05.10.2023

Alien species are species that have spread into nature as a result of human activity, some of which can cause significant harm to both humans and their environment. The owner of the property is obliged to combat alien species on his own property.

Alien species spread easily and reduce biodiversity.

Alien species are species that have spread from their natural range to new areas with humans. Guest species are e.g. giant pipe, giant balsam, black rose or Spanish chip snail.

According to the Alien Species Act (1709/2015), alien species may not be kept, grown, planted, sown or handled in a similar way in such a way that they can enter the environment.

There are many ways to combat alien species. In the areas of Hollola municipality, control work is mainly carried out mechanically and in areas owned by the municipality, but in the control of the giant pipe, there is an opportunity to have an expert present to inform and help in starting the control. Pest control work is carried out by Luontoturva Ky.

Giant pipe and giant balsam, as well as many other alien species, occur throughout the municipality. Information on these observations is requested to facilitate the mapping and control of the species. Findings can only be reported electronically through the feedback service, from which they are directed directly to the contractor doing the remediation work. In the feedback service, you can mark the observation on the map and tell which alien species it is and how extensive the growth is. It should be noted, however, that the owner of the property is himself obliged to combat alien species on his own property. The supervisory authority is the ELY center.

Residents, school classes, associations and others can of course organize guest sports talks if they wish. For that, you have to find out the landowner, make information and remember the snacks. WWF and the Allergia-, Iho- ja Astmaliitto ry have made a great guide for organizing the talks.

Feedback service, select Foreign species observation as the topic!

It would be good to report observations online to the Central Natural History Museum on the website. The information is used to monitor the distribution of alien species.
