Found animals
Last updated: 20.02.2025According to the Order Act, dogs, cats and other domestic and pet animals must be kept on a leash in built-up areas. Animals moving loose and without the owner's contact information are interpreted as found animals.
The Animal Welfare Act (Section 15) obliges municipalities to arrange temporary care for stray and recovered dogs and cats, as well as other similar small companion and hobby animals.
The found animal is cared for for 15 days, after which it is placed in a new home or euthanized. If your dog or cat goes missing, it's a good idea to ask the found animal shelters and also inform them of the missing animal's information.
The municipality is responsible for arranging temporary care for stray animals in accordance with Section 693 of the Animal Welfare Act (Act on Animal Welfare 2023/26).
