Water supply for scattered settlements

Private domestic water wells and waste water systems

Outside of the water supply networks, the owner or occupier of the property is responsible for his own domestic water well and wastewater system.

Even wells and waste water systems built with care and skill cannot survive without regular maintenance

According to expert estimates, almost 80% of the current domestic water wells have deficiencies in the well structures, and 70–80% of the wastewater systems would need improvement measures. Due to deficiencies, rain and melt water, small organisms or rodents can get into the domestic water well, which can spoil the water quality. Correspondingly, inadequately treated wastewater can cause odor problems and the risk of environmental pollution.

Property owners should check the condition and structures of their domestic water well and wastewater system at regular intervals and make the necessary repairs.

In Hollola, concentrations of radon and uranium, as well as nitrate, fluoride and arsenic in some areas, exceeding the quality requirements and targets for domestic water have been detected in private wells. Iron and manganese concentrations are also high in some places. The hygienic quality of drinking water from private wells should be examined every three years, and the chemical properties (e.g. iron, manganese, chloride, nitrate, fluoride) every 5-10 years, depending on the situation and conditions. It is also recommended to examine boreholes for radon and uranium.

You can get instructions from health protection, or the environmental health of Päijät-Häme, for finding out the water quality and renovating the well.
