The goal of the Vesijärvi program is to promote the management of Vesijärvi and other waters in the Lahti region. This program is the fourth in a row and covers the years 2024–2027. The Vesijärvi program is a living planning document that can be updated when conditions or the operating environment change, or when, for example, new research information gives reason for this.
Needs identified at the operational level
In the Vesijärvi program, priorities are assigned to different blocks of activity: In the Vesijärvi catchment area, the aim is to implement combinations of measures aimed at comprehensive water management. In Vesijärvi itself, on the other hand, more and more effective and feasible measures are being sought to curb the internal load released from the bottom. Smaller lakes are managed so that their value for recreational use is maintained or improved.
Emerging themes of the program period are linking water management and climate change prevention and preparedness to each other, as well as safeguarding biodiversity as part of water management. With the Vesijärvi foundation's communication strategy, the position of even more precisely focused communication will remain central. In the future, the priorities of communication will be, in addition to operational communication, increasing the foundation's general awareness and marketing communication aimed at companies.
More concrete plans on a more general level
The Vesijärvi program relies on the Kymijoen-Suomenlahti water management plan drawn up by the environmental administration and the water management measure program of the Häme ELY center that supports it through the setting of goals and the selection of measures. In the water management plan, water status goals and water pollution reduction goals are presented. On the other hand, the action program contains action proposals that should be used to reach the spatial goals. The measures proposals are not binding, but they have been compiled in extensive interaction with various interest groups and therefore have weight.
The Vesijärvi program specifies the restoration measures presented in the water management plan and action program and organizes their implementation and financing.
The Vesijärvi program has been put together in cooperation with the Päijät-Häme Vesijärvi Foundation, the city of Lahti, the municipality of Hollola and the municipality of Asikkala. The Vesijärvi program work has been financed as part of the Water Protection Enhancement Program through the ELY Center in Häme.
The Vesijärvi program is a constantly updated document and its latest version is available at the Vesijärvi Foundation from the website.
