It is always a good idea to offer your extra edible garden produce to neighbors, local social media groups, horse stables, or even a local hunting club, for example, and thus reduce food waste.

Inedible fruit can be sorted into small quantities as biowaste

Small amounts of inedible leftover fruit from your yard, such as apples, plums and pears, as well as their peels and cores, can be placed in a composter intended for food waste or, packed, in the property's biowaste container.

When filling a waste container, it is a good idea to keep in mind its permitted weight limit. Too many apples placed in a waste container can easily make the container too heavy. For example, a 10-liter bucket of apples weighs approximately 5 kg. According to waste management regulations, a 140-liter waste container emptied from a property may contain a maximum of 40 kg of waste and a 240-liter waste container a maximum of 60 kg. A load that is too heavy can overload the lifting mechanism of the waste vehicle and can cause damage to the equipment and waste container, as well as dangerous situations for the driver.

Apples sorted into the waste bin should be packaged like other waste. Biowaste in a ventilated biowaste bin should always be packaged in a paper biowaste bag.

Apples and other garden waste cannot be put in a composter intended for garden waste only. Only leaves, hay, twigs and twigs can be put in there.

Salpakierto accepts surplus fruit free of charge at garden waste collection points

If you have a large amount of spoiled apples and other fruit, it is a good idea to deliver them to the garden waste collection points, where they will be accepted free of charge. Garden waste is accepted at each of Salpakierto Oy's six sorting stations and at the Kärkölä, Myrskylä and Pukkila garden waste collection points.

At garden waste collection points, surplus fruit that has fallen from the tree, such as apples, plums and pears, including rotten and mummified fruit, is sorted into raking waste. The Lahti sorting station at the PILLERI raking waste field has its own sorting area for surplus fruit. Apples packed in plastic bags must be emptied from the bags on site.

Apples brought to sorting stations and other garden waste collection points are utilized in a biogas and composting plant together with raking waste.

Leftover fruit is only accepted during the opening hours of sorting stations and other garden waste collection points, so please remember to check the opening hours and waste collection instructions before you go.

You can find the opening hours and contact information for garden waste collection points at salpakierto.fi
