Chickenpox is a viral disease that usually occurs in childhood, but when contracted in adulthood, it can cause more severe symptoms and increase the risk of complications. Vaccination can prevent the disease and reduce the health effects caused by the disease.
Implementation of chickenpox vaccinations in Päijät-Häme
In child health clinics, chickenpox vaccinations according to the national vaccination program will continue as normal. In school and student health care, vaccination coverage will be checked and missing vaccinations will be supplemented if necessary. Chickenpox coverage for clients planning a pregnancy will be taken into account in child health clinics and contraception services as part of customer guidance. In addition, in social welfare centers and outpatient care, persons who are eligible for the vaccine based on the expansion of the vaccination program will be vaccinated.
The first to receive the vaccine are:
- people who are about to start medication or treatment that severely weakens the immune system
- people who are planning a pregnancy
- born in 2000–2005
- healthcare personnel.
People who already have sufficient protection against chickenpox, for example due to a previous illness or previous vaccinations, do not need the vaccine.
Appointment booking and further information
Those planning a pregnancy should check their chickenpox vaccination status well in advance of pregnancy. If necessary, advice on chickenpox vaccination and vaccinations can be obtained from the clinic and prevention services. People in the free influenza vaccination group, such as pregnant women and people in risk groups, can receive the chickenpox and influenza vaccine at the same visit, when influenza vaccinations begin later in the autumn.
Vaccination appointments at health and social care centres will be opened electronically in the Päijät-Sote app by the beginning of September. Book an appointment at your health and social care centre in the app under "Tetanus or chickenpox vaccination". Write in the additional information field of the appointment whether you are booking an appointment for tetanus or chickenpox vaccination.
